What are positive affirmations?

Positive affirmations are the unseen power that you can develop while saying them. The process that will help your child implement positive thoughts into his/her mind. Daily affirmations, or simple positive statements your child will tell himself every day, are a small investment in a positive mindset that will have a big impact on well-being. Plus it has a special benefit for children as they build their self-image and learn how to navigate their feelings.

Dr Cook published an interesting insight from a study that says: “Research has proven that as humans we believe what we are told—meaning, if you tell your kids they are rotten, more than likely they will act that way,”.

Where the opposite will work as well on which the positive affirmations said to themselves and others are likely to act in ways that reinforce those thoughts. Positive affirmations are positive words that are having an invisible fight against our negative and intrusive thoughts. I am sure not many of us understand the importance of our own words and how these are influencing our minds and mood. That’s why regardless of how hard it is you should make sure you invest time to teach your little one how to maintain positivity. What you can also do is teach your child how to speak to himself kindly because positive affirmations are a powerful tool in changing a person’s life.

Why your child should practice affirmations?

Even if it’s hard to accept, we live in a world where many children are struggling with mental health and intrusive negative thoughts. As adults, we know already life is tough but we often don’t understand it can be the same even for the youngest people. Some of them are struggling to keep up with school and are feeling discouraged and incapable, others find it hard to create and maintain relationships with other children. That can lead to starting feeling lonely and even if for adults these might seem small problems it’s often a much bigger deal for children.

It’s your responsibility as a parent to prepare the children for whatever they may face in life by helping them develop skills and successfully handle negative feelings or strong emotional impact situations without tearing them down. Social-emotional learning needs to be treated with the same engagement and importance as any other topic that a child will learn in life.

Your children need to learn to process their emotions and control them without letting them dictate their existence. Positive affirmations can be what a child needs by providing the language he/she lacks to speak to himself. I know that the beginning may be awkward and forced, probably your child will feel embarrassed by saying the words loud but like any other healthy habit, through practising it will become normal.

In summary, the most positive thoughts your child will have, the better he will feel, and the better his day will go. By using affirmations for children they are disconnecting their ’emotion brain’ and activating the part of the brain responsible for problem-solving, impulse control and emotional regulation.

How affirmations can improve your child’s mindset and move from a fixed to a growth mindset.

We- humans – are made of our thoughts, sometimes can be positive and easy to control, and other times negative and hard to guide. We need to understand that our thoughts will shape our existence and influence our decisions. It’s the same with children. Consistently using positive affirmations can bring plenty of benefits, as per below. A child that’s in continuous developing years, needs to hear this positivity often and needs to truly believe in what he’s saying to himself daily. This will help him become a stronger and happy adult with the below characteristics:

 – a needed growth mindset

 – intrusive negative self-talk – rarely and manageable

–  improving the well being

–  create higher self-esteem and self-confidence

–  helping create a positive self-image

Having high self-esteem will help in sharing kindness and happiness around instead of frustration and madness. A child that is receiving respect and accepting the positivity of the affirmations will most likely share the same words with others.

These benefits aren’t just about good feelings. Self-affirmations light up different parts of the brain, increasing its processing and valuation skills. Consistent positive affirmations can change our brains in amazing ways that sometimes are hard to believe and accept. Do a try, and guide your child.

To Sum Up…

Positive affirmations are one of these tools that are extremely easy but very powerful. You can introduce affirmations by practising together. For example, I do it with my daughter each evening when I put her t bed. I say a few affirmations, she replies after me and then I instruct her to continue until she falls asleep.
